This is the town most Vermonters hope you don’t find out about. Nestled deep in the Cold Hollow Mountains, Montgomery features acres of pristine snowshoeing terrain and affordable property, claims the title of Vermont’s covered bridge capital (there are six within the town limits), and is a short seven-mile (11-kilometer) drive from Jay Peak, the ski resort with the most snow (351 inches/892 centimeters annually) in eastern North America. If you start jonesing for city life, the bright lights and fresh Molson of Montreal are only two hours northwest.

PLAY

During the week, you have entire ski lifts to yourself. A $200 five-day pass gets you legendary East Coast glades and backcountry so you can carve those first tracks all week long (www.jaypeakresort.com).

EAT

The Snow Shoe Lodge and Pub in Montgomery Center is the best place for hard-earned burgers, dark brown beer, and mountain war stories

SLEEP

Jay Peak Resort’s brand new, much-hyped Tram Haus Lodge is slated to open in February 2010. Get in while you can ($125 a person per night, includes breakfast, dinner and lift ticket; www.jaypeakresort.com).
